Hello, PizzaExpress.
We dropped by PizzaExpress' SM North EDSA last week to try the favorites from its international counterparts. A total of five pizza flavors are up for grabs from May 6 to June 30, 2019 and we got to try them all.
First up was Rendang Classic (PHP590), the only thick crust pizza among the five limited offerings. The chunky topping made with braised beef, chili, coconut milk and other spices sure pack a lot of heat. And despite the thick base, it was not enough to balance the spiciness for me.
Thank goodness that I ordered Mixed Berries Smoothie (PHP235) to help me tone down the heat from the Rendang Classic.
Sadly, its berry taste was a bit too light. Unless the spice from the pizza numbed my taste buds.
R's Mango Smoothie (PHP235) tasted a lot better but had stronger yogurt taste than mango.
Next served was Peking Duck Romana (PHP590) which had this perfectly crisp thin crust. Aside from its fantastic crunchy base, I loved the balance of sweet and savory flavors from the house roasted Peking Duck and hoisin sauce.
It took a long while before the other three pizzas were served and the servers were very apologetic about it. Turns out that they were still not that familiar with how to prepare the pizzas hence the delay.
Laksa Romana (PHP650) topped with shrimp, mussels, squid and cilantro looked tame and safe. However, this Singaporean Laksa inspired pizza made me tear up a bit with the heat it brought in my mouth. It was really spicy and not meant for me. But I'm sure big fans of laksa would love this.
If you have low spice tolerance, go for Chicken Satay Romana (PHP495) aside from my new favorite Peking Duck Romana. This smokey pizza topped with barbecue chicken with traditional sweet-savory peanut sauce and pickled vegetables only has a tinge of spice that you could enjoy a whole slice without grabbing your glass for a sip.
But there's also Chili Crab Romana (PHP590) for serious spice lovers. I didn't attempt to try this one after my friends told me how spicy it was. As a foodie with bare minimum tolerance for anything spicy, I had to play it safe.
Hands down, my favorite is Peking Duck Romana and I wouldn't mind grabbing a few slices of this again soon.
