Parent Company of Sunset Grill & Tap and Sunset Cantina Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

The company behind a couple of popular Boston restaurants and bars has filed for bankruptcy.

The Boston Herald is reporting that Sunset Partners Inc., the parent company of Sunset Grill & Tap and Sunset Cantina, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, saying that it has $5.67 million in debt and $1.06 million in assets. The article says that the filing resulted from worries that the Department of Revenue might seize the dining and drinking spots because of $500,000 in unpaid taxes. David Madoff, who is the attorney for the company, states that the owners are hoping to "fix the problem" and that "we expect them to stay open."

Sunset Grill & Tap is located on Brighton Avenue in Allston while the Sunset Cantina is on Commonwealth Avenue by the West Campus of Boston University, with both being known in part for their nachos and extensive beer lists; the former first opened in 1988 while the latter opened in 2001. (Both have been owned by Marc Berkowitz and Ara Balikian since 2014.)
