The Pour House in Boston's Back Bay May Be Reopening

A couple of days ago, it was reported that one of Boston's best-known bars had closed for good, but now we have learned that the place could be returning.

According to Patrick Maguire of Maguire Promotions & Hospitality Consulting, The Pour House in the Back Bay may be coming back, with a Boston Business Journal article saying that Charles M. Talanian, who is the principal owner of the real-estate firm that owns the Boylston Street dining and drinking spot, is working on negotiations where he would buy out his business partners and reopen it possibly within the next 30 days if all goes well. The article mentions that the lease for The Pour House was up in 2024, with Talanian apparently planning to connect the buildings housing The Pour House and the now-closed Lir and develop the space above them around that time, but the COVID-19 pandemic moved those plans up, with Talanian saying that "These bars can't function at 50% occupancy....You've got fixed costs. I can adjust the rent only so far, and then I've got to make the taxes, I've got to make the mortgage. … It's probably the hardest thing I've ever gone through in 50 years." (The BBJ says that the owners of Lir bought themselves out of the lease for a fraction of the remaining $1.7 million lease.)

The Pour House, which first opened nearly 35 years ago, temporarily closed back in March as the pandemic took hold and restaurants and bars were forced to shut down except for takeout/delivery.

The address for The Pour House is 907 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02115.
