Nutella Star Bread | How to make Nutella Star Bread

I know we just completed our Mega BM on a Journey through the Cuisines, and so soon its time for the monthly edition to begin. I have picked up very interesting themes for my kids this week. They were over the board, enjoying the treats. I know when the whole month so focussed on sweets, my littles ones hardly got anything to enjoy. They were in fact coming back asking when I will bake something for them. So I will be going into the task of baking some cakes soon.

This Nutella bread was something I baked within days of Pavani first posting it. I have been seeing this in many blogs, something Pavani's pictures were so pulling and I baked it almost right away. This is also a milestone dish for me, because Chinnu for the first time in his life, eat a bread and enjoyed. Of course, it all happened because I involved him in kneading and playing with the dough for a while, then there was Nutella. He did the spreading for two layers. These were reasons enough to get himself eat this.
Both Konda and Peddu were so taken aback and thrilled that he was eating. They kept asking if he knew he was eating a bread. Chinnu was so boastful in saying he knew it as he was also part of prepping up the dough. This was also the fastest one to disappear. The evening I baked it, it disappeared by night. None of them ate anything else that night.

I am really hoping to repeat this dish soon as Peddu keeps asking when I will bake some garlic bread for him again and the countless bread that I have baked for him.

Coming back to the theme, we are starting week 1 of BM#64, themes on Shaped bread. Since I have a creative BM Buddies who are experts in baking bread, I decided to challenge them to share some shaped bread.

Sending  this to Priya Srinivasan who is hosting my Kid's Delight, themed on Brunch Ideas for Kids.

I also have another Brunch Idea for Kids - Nutella Stuffed Pancakes

Nutella Star Bread

Ingredients Needed:

All-purpose flour 2 cups
Instant Yeast - 2 tsp
Sugar - 2 tbsp
Salt - 1 tsp
Dry Milk powder - 1/4 cup
Lukewarm Water / Milk - 3/4 cup + 2~4tbsp
Unsalted Butter, softened - 1/4 cup
Nutella  - 1/2 cup or more
Milk - 2 tbsp

How to make the Nutella Star Bread

For the Dough

Combine flour, yeast, sugar, salt, dry milk powder, butter and lukewarm water (warm milk) in a large bowl. Mix and knead to make a soft, smooth dough.

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover and let it rise for 60 minutes, until it's nearly doubled in volume. I normally keep it in pre heated oven, it gets done much faster.

Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball. Cover them and let them rise for 15 minutes.

On a lightly greased or floured surface, roll 1 piece of dough into 10" circle. Place the circle on a parchment lined baking sheet. Spread nutella evenly on the surface, leaving 1/4" of bare dough around the perimeter. Roll out a second dough circle the same size as the first and place it on top of
the first, Nutella covered circle. Repeat the layering process - Nutella, dough circle - leave the top circle bare.

Place a 3" bowl or a glass in the center of the dough circle as a guide. With a sharp knife, cut the circle into 16 equal strips, from the cutter to the edge, through all the layers. Using 2 hands, pick up two adjacent strips and twist them away from each other twice so that the top side is facing up again.

Repeat with the remaining strips of dough so that there are eight pairs of strips. Pinch the pairs of strips together to create a star-like shape with eight points.

Cover the star and let it rise until it becomes noticeably puffy, about 45 minutes.

Preheat the oven for 400°F / 200 C

Brush the star with milk and bake for 12~15 minutes, until it's nicely golden.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
 Notes:

You can make this vegan by using almond milk. You can also add 1/4 potato powder as well.
